
2002 Season
Jerry competed in the Super Gas category in Division 2 in 2002. Jerry won
the Super Gas class in Bradenton Florida driving a new 2002 Chevrolet Camaro built by Rick Jones. Jerry’s youngest son, Jeffrey, in the meantime, began driving Super Gas as well.
NHRA began contesting a brand new class the last half of the 2002 season which was called Top Sportsman. Once Jerry heard of Top Sportsman coming to NHRA, he began converting his Camaro to Top Sportsman trim which included installing a new Reher-Morrison engine.
2003 Season
Jerry began running a full schedule of Division 2 (LODRS) events and became the runner-up for the Southeast Division 2 in Top Sportsman. Son, Jeffrey, also driving a pro-stock truck ran the last 3 races out of 8 and finished 14th.
2004 Season
Jerry purchased Kurt Johnson’s AC Delco Cavalier. With the new car, Jerry finished 9th for the year and Jeffrey finished 8th. After realizing that the Camaro was the better car for Top Sportsman, Jerry got back into the Camaro and won the 1st race out with it at Bowling Green, KY. The Cavalier was sold.
2005 Season
Jerry won 4 LODRS events and captured the the 2005 Top Sportsman championship with a total of 431 points! Winning Bradenton, Atlanta, Bowling Green and Columbus Ohio all in one season. Jeffrey concentrated on Super Gas and finished 6th in points with a win at Orlando. During the 2005 racing season, Jerry ordered a new 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt from RJ Race Cars built by Rick Jones and a new 747 c.i Reher Morrison engine built especially for Jerry (without nitrous) to qualify in the top half of the field. Jerry took delivery of the new Cobalt at the end of the 2005 racing season. After testing that fall in the new Cobalt, Jeffrey took over the driving duties of the Camaro. The two car Top Sportsman team was then ready for the 2006 season.
2006 Season
Jeffrey with a win at Atlanta Dragway and a runner-up at Gainesville, set the stage for runner-up in points for the Southeast Division 2 Top Sportsman Class. Jerry nished 7th in points with a runner-up at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Valdosta Ga.
2007 Season
Both Drivers were at the top of the field with Jeffrey finishing #1 and and Jerry nishing #2 in LODRS points. This is the year that the famous “father / son” race took place in Gainesville Fl. This race received attention from The National Dragster, RJ Race Cars news, Reher Morrison Racing Engines and numerous local newspapers. Jeffrey won at Gainesville defeating Jerry in a very close final round. Jeffrey also won the Dart Dash at the Southern Nationals in Commerce Ga. Jeffrey went on to win his first Division 2 championship in Top Sportsman.
2008 Season
Another huge year for Jeffrey winning the Division 2 championship. Winning 2 consecutive championships has not been accomplished by anyone other than himself in the history of NHRA Division 2 Top Sportsman racing. Jerry went on the finish 6th in overall points. This is the year that Jerry Barker Racing was labeled the most dominant Top Sportsman team in the country having won over 15 races in six years! At the end of the 2008 season, Gene and Wesley Adams joined Jerry and Jeffrey Barker to form Jerry Barker Motorsports. The new company that was established specializes in racing equipment, race trailers and transporters. The business is housed in a brand new state of the art 8,000 square foot building which is located right on I-75 in Byron Ga. This formed the Jerry Barker Motorsports Race Team in full force with four complete race cars competing in National and Divisional races throughout the NHRA Drag Racing circuit all over the country.
